Resident letter

Dear Amsterdammer,

On Saturday 21 June, we will celebrate the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam on a 15-kilometre car-free stretch of the A10 Ring Road. It will be a truly Amsterdam-style celebration, with music, sport, dance, art, food and drink, and much more. And we would love for you to join us!

You live near the festival site or along the route to it. In this letter, we will explain what’s going to happen and how you can order a free ticket.

An Amsterdam celebration!
There will be around 25 different activities, by and for Amsterdammers. For example, ”Trouwen Op de Ring” (Wedding on the Ring), where 20 couples from across the city will tie the knot. A large sports zone with 3×3 basketball, kickboxing, street football, BMX and more. A unique forest will appear. There will be a big music event with performances by well-known artists such as Jan Smit and Danny de Munk. At ”Buurten Op de Ring” (Neighbourhoods on the Ring), you’ll find African dance, music from around the world, and communal cooking. And plenty more music: bands, DJs, and Amsterdam choirs. Want to see the full programme and map? Visit www.opdering.nl/en.

Order your free ticket!
Would you like to join this special event? You will need a free ticket to attend the festival Op de Ring. From 21 May at 10:00, you can order your ticket via www.opdering.nl/en.

What will you notice in your neighbourhood?
You live close to the festival site. This means you’ll notice the set-up, the event itself, and the breakdown of the festival. Below, we’ll explain what to expect so you know what’s coming.

Closure of the A10 Ring Road
The Ring will be closed from Friday evening, 20 June 2025, at 21:00. The road will reopen on Sunday 22 June 2025 at 15:00. Several streets surrounding the Ring and within the city will also be closed to car and lorry traffic. Hospitality venues and supermarkets will have extra time on Friday evening to replenish their stock. All of this ensures that emergency services—police, ambulance, and fire brigade—can always get through. You’ll find a map below showing the closures and diversions. This map is also available www.opdering.nl/en/transport-access/.

Leave the car at home!
Your home/business will remain accessible, but expect it to be very busy. We strongly encourage everyone to travel by foot, bicycle or public transport. Please avoid using the car. If you must drive in, out, or through Amsterdam, please allow for extra travel time, which may be over an hour.

Public transport
Public transport will be busier than usual. Extra metro services will run, and longer trains will be deployed. Trains will not stop at Lelylaan and RAI stations. Metro stations De Vlugtlaan, RAI and Amstelveenseweg will be closed. Additional measures will be in place at Zuid and Sloterdijk stations to manage the crowds and keep everyone safe. For more information, visit www.opdering.nl/en/transport-access/.

Set-up and breakdown
To keep the road closure as short as possible, the festival will be set up and dismantled in a very short period of time. This means we’ll also be working at night. This may cause some noise disturbance. We will comply with the permitted noise levels.

During the festival
The festival kicks off in Oost at 09:00 with the Run Op de Ring. In Zuid, the festival opens at 10:00, and in West at 11:00. It will finish around 22:15. It will be busier than usual, and as local residents, you may hear the festivities. The festival entrances are designed to handle the crowds. There will be extra facilities such as taxis, bike parking, and toilets. Signage and additional staff will help guide everything smoothly. Staff and officials from your district will also be closely involved.
